Miramar 2011 Airshow, Story and Photos by Frank Lorey III. The 2011 MCAS Miramar air show celebrated 100 years of naval aviation, and who better to do it as the featured act than the Blue Angels. The official theme this year was “A Salute to San Diego: The Birthplace of Naval Aviation”. Earlier in the year a special air show at NAS North Island commemorated the actual first flight.
Naval Air Station North Island Airshow 2011, Story and Photos by Frank Lorey III. Naval Air Station North Island was the official host to the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation airshow on February 12th, 2011. The first Naval Aviation flight took place in San Diego Bay on January 26th, 1911, but it was actually by famed aviator Glenn Curtiss. The A-1 Triad, designed by Curtiss, was the first aircraft purchased by the U.S. Navy in May 1911—marking the official start to Naval Aviation. Lt. T.G. Ellyson had been trained by Curtiss at the “Curtiss Aviation Camp” on North Island, and became Naval Aviator #1. Ellyson flew the A-1 Triad here probably in July 1911.
Miramar 2010 Airshow , Story and Photos by Frank Lorey III, The 2010 Miramar Airshow had great attendance despite less than perfect weather. Over 800,000 people visited the three-day, four-performance event. Both the Friday and Sunday shows had the morning portions cancelled due to fog and low clouds. Even Saturday had the visibility marred by lots of haze due to the humidity.
Collings Bombers Tour The West 2010, Story and photos by Frank Lorey III, Two familiar World War II bombers, a B-17 Flying Fortress "Nine O' Nine" and a B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft" are usually out making frequent stops at airshows and general aviation airports throughout the United States. The vintage bombers are owned by the non-profit Collings Foundation, and the tours usually start in early April, with plans for the planes to stay out until mid-November, when they will return to their base for about eight weeks of maintenance.
Liberty Belle B-17 has Miracle Comeback 2010, story and Photographs by Frank Lorey, III. For the last several years, a B-17G Flying Fortress bomber from World War II has regularly been flying circuits around the United States. It has even made it to England. The biggest story is that it should never be flying at all based on what happened to it prior to an exyensive restoration effort that took many years.
Miramar 2009 Airshow, story and Photographs by Frank Lorey, III. The 2009 MCAS Miramar Airshow thrilled the usual crowds with a new twist this year. The Canadian Snowbirds flight demonstration team performed for the first time in the airshow’s long history. The team is based in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, and only rarely makes shows this far to the south.
EAA B-17 Roams The West 2009, story and Photographs by Frank Lorey, III. “Aluminum Overcast”, the Experimental Aircraft Association’s restored B-17G Flying Fortress, stopped at several Southern California airports as part of the 2009 national tour. The popular World War II bomber has participated in tours across the U.S. since 1994, as well as being featured at the EAA annual AirVenture fly-in each summer in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Helicopters 2008, story and Photographs by Frank Lorey, III. The Marine Corps rolled out two new models of very familiar helicopters at Camp Pendleton in December 2008. The UH-1Y Super Huey, and the AH-1Z Super Cobra share 84% of the same parts, making maintenance and training much easier.

You show up at one of the numerous smaller airshows in the Western United States, and all of a sudden to your surprise you see and hear four jets in formation coming at you. Is it A) the Navy Blue Angels; B) the Air Force Thunderbirds; or C) the Thunder Delphins? If you have recently been to airshows in El Cajon, Ramona, or Hemet you know the answer is “C”.
